Chickadee study

Camouflaged, Chickadee study

One of the favourite winter activites for my family is going for a winter hike at local Botanical Gardens and feeding chickadees by hand. They are such cheerful and energetic birds! It amazes me they don't freeze mid-flight. Such tiny bodies cannot possibly stave off freezing temperatures of -30 C. Yet they not only survive, they thrive.

There is nothing more endearing than feeling their surprisingly strong claws encircle your finger and their bright eyes gaze curiously into yours as they expertly pick a seed off your palm and fly off.

In the summer, when food is abundant and their little bodies are safely camouflaged in the mosaic of shapes of light and dark, they are impossible to see.
